The ability to advance educational impact through learning analytics requires that we first understand how students process course material in order to build mastery of a subject. The data logged from student interactions in an Open edX course provides the raw data and the challenge becomes parsing, storing and analyzing to gain insight into learning paths. Research at MIT Lincoln Laboratory has led to open source scalable big data analysis tools that we apply to the Open edX data analysis problem.
