Design and development of teaching and learning (T&L) tools can be an exhaustive process. Especially for online courses that commonly contain thousands of students, as is the case with IELTSx, a popular UQx MOOC with more than 180,000 total student enrolments. One of the considerable challenges for a team such as UQx is to design and develop T&L tools that are scaleable, adaptable, user-friendly, meet objectives, and most importantly, enjoyable. There is nothing more frustrating as a student than to encounter countless monotonous quizzes and assessments that take up a great deal of energy for little gain. This talk will reflect on how UQx meets and addresses these challenges by taking you through the lifecycle of a T&L tool that has been developed; initial idea conception, design, development and deployment.
